Thundercloud Part One
Born in Canada in 1856 to a French father and a Blackfoot mother; Dominic Plante was better known as Chief Thundercloud.
Western artist Frederick Remington used Thundercloud as a model for a series of illustrations of the Blackfoot and Crow Nation.
A series of photo postcards was also produced.
I found these two online:
I am proud to own this one:
Other Thundercloud depictions:
Artist Eulabee Dix (1878–1961) in 1901 for a miniature watercolor on ivory that now resides in the Smithsonian.
(From the National Portrait Gallery-Smithsonian Institute) |
Artist F.C. Stahr in 1899.
This original etching is listed on Ebay right now for $5,250-LINK |
Engravers never name a specific model for their work unless it's a president. Engravers always claim it's a composite of several different people or simply a generic image that graces our coins.
Does that profile look familiar?
